So revered is the Baldwin apple that Massachusetts has not one but two monuments to the bright red winter fruit. A small hard apple remarkably free of blight and blemishes, people prized it for making hard cider and pie. Commercial growers loved it because it produced huge crops every other year and shipped easily. William Butters bought the farm and transplanted the tree near his house. Others called it the Butters apple.

Baldwin apple

First time ordering? History: This classic American cooking apple was discovered by chance around in Massachusetts. It was eventually brought to the attention of a Col. Baldwin, after whom the variety was later named, who helped to spread it further. By this was one of the most commonly grown apples in the US, although its popularity began to decline by the s, exasperated by a terrible winter in that wiped out a significant number of trees.

Despite this, Baldwin is making a bit of a comeback and a monument to this apple still stands in Wilmington, Massachusetts, around where it was discovered. Why We Grow It: Baldwin apples produce large, greenish-yellow and maroon fruit with firm, sweet flesh that maintains its shape and crispness when cooked. The fruit produced in our test orchard has been attractive and blemish-free.

Soil Preference: Sandy loam, loam, clay loam. Prefers average to moist conditions, avoid planting anywhere that floods for more than two weeks in the spring. Generally quite adaptable to different soil conditions.

Growth Habits and Disease Resistance: Semi-spur bearing, vigorous, spreading, low precocity, some tendency to biennial bearing.

Some susceptibility to fireblight, scab, mildew, and bitter pit. Pollination: Triploid, requires two pollinators of different non-triploid apple varieties that bloom around the same time. Close search. Shipping calculated at checkout.

Ideal Food Basket in Baldwin

Baldwin was one of the most important American commercial apples in the 19th century, being an excellent keeping apple and with a fairly thick skin which made it able to withstand long-distance transportation. Baldwin is a genuine dual-purpose apple. The flavor for eating fresh is sweet and unpretentious, but crisp and pleasant. It is equally at home in the kitchen where it retains its shape when cooked, and lends a moderately rich sweet flavor to apple pies. Have you tasted this variety? COVID-19 Update: District 8 Food Purveyors Open For Business

Unfortunately at this time we are almost completely out of precut Christmas trees. We will remain open in the bakery and the barn, on weekends through Christmas Eve. It is about an hour away from New York City. The farm began as cattle farm and evolved to an agricultural farm. Depending on your seasonal needs; visit us in the spring to buy a varied selection of flowers and vegetable plants, the autumn for apple picking, peach picking and visiting the pumpkin patch, and in the winter for Christmas trees. Visiting Stuart's Fruit Farm in the autumn is an exceptional time of the year.

Growing apples takes all year. It is a wrinkly little bud that will become the apple which you might eat a year from now, so be careful when you are picking! The more pressure you use to pick an apple off the tree, the more likely you will bruise it. Hold the apple in the palm of your hand and lightly grasp the apple.
